Here’s what’s happening

HMRC is changing how sole traders report Income Tax. Instead of one big Self Assessment at the end of the year, you’ll now send a short summary every 3 months using approved software. It’s called Making Tax Digital.

Who’s affected?

If you’re self-employed and earn more than £50,000 a year, you must use MTD from April 2026. Earning over £30,000? You’ll need to join from April 2027. These thresholds are based on your gross trading income, before expenses.

What do you actually have to do?

Every 3 months, you send HMRC a summary of your self-employment income and expenses. In most cases, that’s just two numbers: total income and total expenses for the quarter. At year-end, you file a Final Declaration — which replaces your old Self Assessment.

Filing takes about 60 seconds

Here’s everything you need to do

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I actually have to do this?

If you’re self-employed and earn over £50,000 a year, yes — from 6 April 2026. If you earn between £30,000 and £50,000, you’ll need to start from April 2027. These thresholds are based on your gross trading income (before expenses).

What exactly do I have to file every quarter?

A summary of your self-employment income and expenses for the period. In most cases, this is just two numbers. You don’t need to itemise individual transactions. GoFile guides you through it step by step.

I already do a Self Assessment — isn’t that enough?

The traditional annual Self Assessment is being replaced for those within the MTD thresholds. You’ll file quarterly updates throughout the year, then a Final Declaration at year-end (which replaces your old Self Assessment). GoFile handles both.

Do I need to keep digital records?

You need to maintain digital records of your income and expenses, but this can be as simple as a spreadsheet. You don’t need bookkeeping software. GoFile works as bridging software — you keep your records however you like, then enter the totals into GoFile for submission.

How much does it cost?

Getting started is free — no credit card required. Dividends, interest, pensions, and capital gains are included free, forever. Quarterly self-employment updates are just £49.99/year +VAT. No contract, and you can cancel anytime.

What if I make a mistake?

You can correct and refile at any time through GoFile. The software also validates your figures before submission and flags anything that looks off, so errors are caught before they reach HMRC.

Can my accountant use this too?

Yes. If you have an accountant, they can create an agent account and manage your filings for you. We offer special pricing for accountants managing multiple clients. See our accountants page for details.
