Not all income fits neatly into employment or self-employment. Here’s what HMRC says about one-off payments, casual earnings, and other miscellaneous income.

The £1,000 Trading Allowance

The trading allowance covers small amounts of casual or miscellaneous income. If your total income from self-employment or casual trading is under £1,000, it’s tax-free and you don’t need to tell HMRC.[1]

This makes life simple for people who earn small amounts on the side — car boot sales, occasional tutoring, one-off freelance jobs.

What Counts as Miscellaneous Income

Income that doesn’t fit into standard employment or self-employment categories includes:[2]

  • One-off freelance jobs or commissions
  • Occasional tutoring, babysitting, or gardening
  • Selling items you’ve made (crafts, baked goods, etc.)
  • Competition or prize money (if not from gambling)
  • Commission or referral fees
  • Casual work that doesn’t constitute a regular trade

When Casual Earnings Become Self-Employment

HMRC looks at several factors to decide whether your activity is a trade:[1]

  • Regularity — is it a one-off or ongoing?
  • Profit motive — are you trying to make money?
  • Organisation — do you have a system, marketing, dedicated workspace?
  • Scale — is the income significant?

If your activity crosses these lines, you should register as self-employed rather than treating it as casual income.

Gambling and Lottery Winnings

Winnings from gambling, lotteries, and betting are tax-free in the UK. This applies to casino winnings, horse racing, football pools, the National Lottery, and scratch cards.[4]

However, if you earn interest or investment income on your winnings, that interest is taxable as normal.

Selling Personal Possessions

Selling your own belongings is generally not taxable. However, Capital Gains Tax may apply if:[3]

  • A single item (or set) sells for more than £6,000
  • The item is not a “wasting asset” (one with a predictable lifespan of 50 years or less — like a car, which is always exempt)

Everyday items like furniture, electronics, and clothing are almost always exempt.

Tips and Gratuities

Tips are always taxable, whether you’re employed or self-employed. If you’re employed, your employer should include tips in your PAYE. If you’re self-employed, include them in your trading income.[2]

Reporting Miscellaneous Income

If your casual income exceeds £1,000 and constitutes self-employment, report it on SA103. If it’s truly miscellaneous one-off income, use the “other income” box on the main SA100 form.[5] Both are part of your Self Assessment return, which you can file online with HMRC-recognised software such as GoFile.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I pay tax on small amounts of casual income?

Are gambling winnings taxed in the UK?

No. Winnings from gambling, lotteries, and betting are completely tax-free in the UK. This applies to casino winnings, horse racing, football pools, the National Lottery, and scratch cards. However, interest earned on winnings is taxable.

Do I pay tax on selling personal possessions?

Generally no. Selling your own belongings is not taxable. However, Capital Gains Tax may apply if a single item or set sells for more than £6,000 and is not a wasting asset. Everyday items like furniture, electronics, and clothing are almost always exempt.
